Isn’t it great that the rinks are finally open and we can all enjoy skating… thanks to Bob Guinette for overseeing the efforts. And thank you to Trinity, our corporate sponsor, who has provided funding that allows us to operate the rinks with no financial shortfall. We are indebted to them.
Alta Vista is a neighbourhood in transition, with lots of new young families moving in and some of our senior residents moving on. This change is gradually being mirrored in the Alta Vista Community Association (AVCA). At this year’s AVCA Annual General Meeting, Bill Pugsley and Dorothy Valliant both stepped down after many years of serving on the Association’s Executive Committee. Bill has been looking after the AVCA’s website at avca.ca since it got up and running in 2009. Dorothy has kept the membership records for the Association for a long time. Both have helped out with the community picnic for many years—you might have seen them volunteering at one of the AVCA tables or the food concession. Thanks for everything you’ve contributed over the years, Bill and Dorothy. A community needs volunteers to be a great place to live.
Remember that AVCA is only as strong as its membership… please join. And, while two new directors have joined the Executive Committee, we still have openings for more, especially for a recording secretary.
Did you know that AVCA has a Facebook page? Log in to Facebook and search for “Alta Vista Community Association”–you should see the apple tree logo before you’re finished typing. Once you find the page, join the people who “like” it and you’ll start to see the occasional update appearing in your news feed. We’ll be using Facebook to post event notices and invite your participation in community projects. Coming soon… a new look to our website.
2013 is an important year for Alta Vista. This year the City is renewing its Official Plan and reviewing the Zoning By-Laws and the Master Transportation Plan as part of that exercise. Please check the City website for White Papers on these topics. These should be available by the time you read this. We do not anticipate major changes to the zoning for our community but we always need to be watchful. The AVCA will post our analysis of any proposed changes on our website as soon as information is available.
On the planning front, a revision to an approved site plan proposal for Kilborn and Playfair Drive will see two 14-storey residential buildings added to this high-density residential area. A new land use planning study is looking at how the land around Hurdman Transit station might be re-zoned to greatly increase the density of land use there.
