• Want to garden, but don’t have a garden?

• Want to help people with their gardens?

• Want to improve the local area?

The purpose of this group is to offer members an opportunity to share their gardening knowledge and skills.

  • Lana Doss from The Fine Gardening Group will serve as “crew chief” for projects currently in development as well as those that will be created as time, talent and funding allow.
  • The Team can meet as required but during the growing season, April through September, meets more frequently to keep up with gardening tasks required.
  • Join us! AVCA May Meeting on Tuesday

The scents of BBQ, fresh cut grass and street sweeping dust is in the air. Ah, springtime in ‎Alta Vista and nearly time for our May AVCA meeting.

Our next meeting is Tuesday May 17th at 7:30pm at Rideau Park United Church. This will be our last scheduled meeting prior our summer break, resuming again in September.

AVCA Perennial Exchange

This coming Sunday, May 8th – Mother’s Day
Time: 10:30am (exchange) / Plant sale at noon
Location: Billings Estate National Historic Site
2100 Cabot Street
(off Pleasant Park, just west of the transitway)

As in past years, the AVCA Perennial Exchange is being held at the Billings Estate and the format remains the same. Here’s the schedule:

10 to 10:30 – Set-up location
10:30 to 11 – Gardeners arrive with plants (1)
11 to 12 noon – Exchange takes place
Noon to 1:00 – Sale of remaining plants (2)

(1) What to bring: Any hardy perennials, in pots or containers with identifying tags (tape on the pot or a Popsicle stick in the dirt are good indicators). Annuals and seeds are also welcome. Vegetables too! Sometimes we even have tropical houseplants from someone downsizing. Please avoid listed invasive plants and indicate aggressive spreaders.
(2) All proceeds go to the Alta Vista Community Association.

Alta Vista Perennial Exchange this Sunday

Sunday, May 10th, is Mother’s Day and the fifth annual Alta Vista Perennial Exchange. The exchange is held at the Billings Estate National Historic Site on Cabot Street. You might also want to enjoy the Billings Estate’s Mother’s Day tea.

The schedule for the exchange is:

  • Set-up from 10:30 to 11am
  • Plant exchange from 11 until noon
  • Sale of any remaining plants until 1pm

Plants cost $3 for small pots and $5 for large pots, with proceeds going to the Alta Vista Community Association.
