Committees

To support the work of the AVCA, there are a number of Committees whose work supports the association.

1. Affordable Housing Committee

2. Climate Change and Environment Committee

The Climate Change and Environment Committee promotes awareness of these “big” issues, as well tracking local activities such as the City’s Solid Waste Management Plan and power outages occurring in parts of Alta Vista. The Committee participates in the Community Associations for Environmental Sustainability (CAFES) group, and is planning events such as an Eco-Tour Jane’s Walk in 2024.

3. Greenspace Stewardship Committee

The current mandate of the Greenspace Stewardship Committee is to identify, monitor, address and report issues and problems including but not limited to conservation, restoration, safety and health that arise on the Greenspace area located between Pleasant Park Road and Heron Road on behalf of the citizens in our community.

The Alta Vista community faced losing the Greenspace to development in the 1990’s. It was determined then that the community should maintain vigilance and continue to monitor this community asset going forward. A sub-committee was struck and has continued to monitor the area, organize semi-annual clean-ups and activities such as monitoring the pipeline going through Grasshopper Hill and opposing the windmill proposed for Grasshopper Hill.

The specific area of interest to this Sub-Committee lies between Pleasant Park Road and Heron Road. It includes Pleasant Park Woods, Kilborn Park, Grasshopper Hill, WRENS Way and all other passive recreation land.

4. Heritage Sub-Committee

The mandate is to ensure conservation and documentation of heritage assets within the AVCA catchment area

5. Invasive Management and Land Restoration Committee

6. Local Food Committee

The Local Food Committee liaises with a number of church, school and community gardens throughout the ward. It seeks to maintain the agricultural heritage of Alta Vista by supporting and promoting skills such as seed saving, composting, organic pest control, preserving the harvest, and identifying edible and medicinal wild plants.

Through the growing season, from May to October, the AVCALFC meets in the Food Bank Garden of St Thomas the Apostle Church, 2345 Alta Vista Drive, on Saturdays, 10-12. From November to April, the committee meets on the second Monday of the month, 7-8:30 PM, also at St Thomas.
